Woking Squash Rackets Club

This Club was founded in 1954 by Denys and Jane Paterson and Ken Ouin, who organised use of the courts at the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Woking.

Upon closure of the Wheatsheaf Hotel courts, the Club teams continued to play in the Surrey Cup, under the captaincy of Eric Williams while new premises were planned. The new courts were completed in 1965 through the efforts of Denys Paterson, Chairman of the Club, who subsequently became President, and continued in this office until he passed away in 1992.

He was assisted by his wife Jane, and by Jim Marley and Peter Lewison, who negotiated grants from the Department of Education and the National Playing Fields Association and loans from Woking Council, and procured the lease of the current grounds in Horsell.

The club has three very well-maintained squash courts, which are used exclusively for squash and racketball. There is also a bar which is staffed every week-night. The club runs subsidised lessons for junior members at the weekends.

There are a number of social events; you can have fun at the Beaujolais Quiz Night, New Year's Eve, Finals Night, Charity evenings at the club, sometimes with light meals. The Annual Dinner Dance is a more formal event that is always well supported. Occasional visits to see and play real tennis have been arranged too.

The bar is normally open Monday to Friday from about 6:00pm to 10:30pm and most Saturday afternoons when Vets matches are played.

Competitions and Teams

The club has a number of teams competing in the Surrey county leagues:

  • 4 teams in the winter leagues
  • 3 teams in the summer leagues
  • 1 ladies team
  • 5 veterans teams
  • 1 vintage team

There are also a large number of internal squash leagues (normally 10 or more) catering for the full range of ability at the club. There are two racketball leagues, a weekday league and a junior ladder. In addition, annual club tournaments are held in Spring.

Club Night

Weekly club nights are on Thursdays from 7:45pm when members can turn up and play the next available player regardless of their standard. Playing sessions are 20 minutes long (15 minutes if busy) to ensure everyone has a reasonable time on court. Afterwards make time for a chat at the bar. The evening winds up between 10:00pm and 11:00pm.

If you think you might be interested in joining the club, grab your kit and come along one Thursday evening for a game! Drop us an e-mail at clubnight@wokingsquashclub.org and we will be only too happy to meet you there and show you the ropes. New members have found that playing at club nights is a good way to work out which league they would be best to start in. You can even try your hand at doubles!

Court Booking

A session for playing squash lasts for 45 minutes. Courts may be booked 8 days in advance, via the on-line booking system. This can be done from home or office, or by using the computer terminal at the club.

Off-peak members have restricted playing times: they may play and book courts only from 9:00am to 4:15pm weekdays. They may play at any time on weekends and bank holidays.

Members are restricted to booking only one peak time court per day.

Junior members may play and book courts from 9:00am to 4:15pm; other restrictions apply.

Guests may play squash with a member at the club no more than 4 times a year for a visitor's fee, currently £3.
